About the Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan

The Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan, founded in May 1960, is committed to active participation in eye health care and the promotion of academic research in ophthalmology. The academic research focus of Taiwanese ophthalmologists primarily encompasses epidemiology, stem cell study, glaucoma, and neuro-ophthalmological science. Ophthalmologic residents are required to undergo 4 years of training. Currently, a total of 31 hospitals provide residency training, and there is an average number of 44 residents who join the hospitals each year.

Our long-term objectives lie in improving preventative medicine, basic and clinical research, as well as establishing a nationwide registration and reporting system on ophthalmic diseases. The Charity Eye Disease Service in Rural Communities, one of Taiwan society's short-term objectives, started in 2004 in central and eastern Taiwan and continues to offer free medical eye care in rural and mountainous areas throughout the whole country.
